Honpukuji Woodland Burial

more

Honpuku-ji Temple in Shiga Prefecture has a history of 700 years since its founding. Aiming to renew the temple grounds for the future, a woodland burial has been newly established in the peony garden. In spring, when large peonies bloom, many people visit the temple to see the garden. We wanted to create a landscape that would preserve this beautiful environment. Using existing materials such as gravel, cedar, and stone, we have regenerated the garden to incorporate the cemetery. The large rock that was originally at the center of the site has been left in place and serves as a marker for the communal grave. A cemetery has been created where people naturally gather, not only when visiting graves.
