Kyoto Townhouse with Studio

more

A newly built home for an artist and their family in Kyoto, where traditional streetscapes remain. The site faces a small park integrated into the block, featuring a narrow frontage and deep depth—a so-called “eel’s bed.”
A two-story-high open eaves space spans the full frontage, creating an atelier that flows seamlessly with the street. Passing beside the atelier leads to a tsuboniwa courtyard, revealing a circulation path connecting the front and rear buildings. By arranging the atelier, courtyard, and living spaces in a three-dimensional layout, we created a sense of distance that supports comfortable coexistence within a living environment where work and residence are closely integrated.
The exterior features dark colors that blend into Kyoto’s landscape, while the interior effectively employs bright hues. We aimed for a bright, warm environment where the greenery of the courtyard and nearby trees can be felt from every room.
